Rupf, Sheriff-Coroner 9 County DATE: September 26,2001 I SUBJECT: ADDrm Contract for Tobacco Laws Enforcement Position I � SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: I APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Sheriff, or designee, to sign a contract on behalf of the County with James McCauley to enforce compliance with smoking regulations for the period of October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2002, in the amount of$46,800. I II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE. Funding for this position isiprovided by a State grant managed by Health Services. I III. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S): I The Office of the Sheriff executed a memorandum of understanding with Health Services on May 24, 2001. This agreement commits)our office to enforce compliance with Labor Code section 6404.5, which addresses smoking lin the workplace, and Penal Code section 308a, which addresses the sales of tobacco products to, and smoking by, minors. This agreement obligates us to provide 4290 hours of service over the three year period (September 1, 2001 through June 30, 2004) of the grant; an average of 130 hours per month. James McCauley is a retired deputy sheriff with extensive experience in Vice Unit of the Investigation Division. His knowledge and expertise are particularly applicable'to the Tobacco Laws Enforcement Position. I .
