SUBJECT: Bay Area Supermarket Strike
RESOLUTION NO. 20011 471
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors contact representatives of Bay Area
Supermarkets and representatives of organized labor and request that they immediately
resume negotiations in order to reach an agreed upon union contract; and
Further, be it resolved that the Board of Supervisors will offer its services as a facilitator to
the ensuing talks.
BACKGROUND:
Representatives of Albertson's, Inc. and Safeway, Inc. and union representatives of nearly
25,000 Bay Area supermarket workers have been meeting for the past nine months to
negotiate a collective bargaining agreement. The parties have failed to reach an agreement.
The markets have given a "last, best and final offer"that expires on or before October 10,
2001. The eight Bay Area unions are unanimously recommending rejection of this final
offer to their memberships. No further negotiations between the parties have been
scheduled. An ensuing strike would affect thousands of supermarket workers and
customers and our local economy at this very difficult time.
