HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10022001 - C.14 ��Owtm RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE RESOLUTION NO. 20OV462 ALAMEDA-CONTRA COSTA PUBLIC HEALTH COALITION FOR DEVELOPING A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INITIATIVE TO IDENTIFY AND HELP VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WHEREAS, domestic violence is a prominent and under-reported public health concern, estimated to occur in one-third of heterosexual and same-sex intimate relationships and crossing all economic, educational, ethnic, age and racial lines; and WHEREAS, victims of domestic abuse include nearly four million women every 3 ear, an estimated 240,000 of whom are pregnant, an unknown number of males and millions of children who witness and/or are subjected to the abuse; and WHEREAS, the Boards of Supervisors of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties recognize the public health threat posed by domestic violence and have taken steps to reduce its prevalence by upporting programs to identify and help domestic violence victims; and WHEREAS, victims of domestic violence may find it easier to come forward to s ek assistance from a trusted caregiver in the health care:setting; and WHEREAS, the Alameda-Contra Costa public health coalition —comprised of the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association; the East Bay Section of the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California and the Public Health Departments of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties—has developed a domestic violence initiative providing physicians, hospitals and the Public Health.Departments in the E.ast Bay with tools for screening and referring victims of domestic violence to support services. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Al meda County and Contra Costa County commend and applaud the Alameda-Contra Costa Public Health Coa ition—comprised of the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association, the Hospital Council of Northern Cali ornia and the Public Health Departments of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties for developing a domestic vio ence initiative that will provide the medical community with tools to identify and help victims of domestic violence.
