OFFICE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RE COMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDED ACTION:
ADOPT Resolution authorizing the Sheriff, on behalf of the County, to submit an application to
the State of California, Office of Criminal Justice Planning, to receive up to $198,000 in
reimbursement for participating in the State's DNA Cold Hit Program between July 1, 2001 and
June 30, 2004. (Resolution No. 2001/75)
I
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
NONE. The funding received will reimburse costs incurred to participate in the program.
III. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S):
In June, 2000, the State Legislature appropriated $50 million to forensic laboratories for the
purpose of examining suspectless sexual assault kits and determining the genetic profile of the
perpetrator. The genetic profile will then be search against the DOJ Convicted Offender DNA
Databank. The amount of funds available to each laboratory is based upon the number of
qualifying cases. We anticipate reimbursement of up to $198,000 over the course of the three-
year grant period.
IV. CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Failure to adopt the attached Resolution would result in loss of the opportunity to participate in this
program and received reimbursement for our efforts.
