HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12042001 - P.1 je- In the Matter of Recognition of the Work ) Of the Breast Cancer Partnership and ) r ��d Its African American Task Force ) 14--.50 /W11,00 Whereas, breast cancer rates are higher in Contra Costa County than for Cal: Whereas, in 1997, 151.2 Contra Costa women per 100,000 developed breast cancer compared to the statewide rate of 127.4 per 100,000;and Whereas, if you are born a white woman in Contra Costa, you are more likely to get breast cancer; however, if you.are born an African American woman in this County you are more likely to die of the disease; Whereas, early detection is essential in minimizing morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer; and Whereas, 1992 data indicated that only 44 percent of African American women and 59 percent of Latina women with breast cancer in Contra Costa County were being diagnosed at an early stage compared to seventy-two percent of white women; and Whereas, health disparities among minorities are not inevitable -- they have causes,which can be identified, addressed, and eliminated through concerted efforts of community groups and public health agencies; and Whereas, broad community involvement among community-based organizations, the Public I Iealth Department, faith communities, and private sector health care providers, among others, focused on reducing the impact of breast cancer; and Whereas, 1997 data indicated that seventy-one percent of.African American women and 70 percent of Latina women with breast cancer in Contra Costa were diagnosed at an early stage;and Whereas, this indicates the elimination of a serious health disparity in breast cancer early detection rates among African American and Latina women in Contra Costa County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors commends and supports the important and effective work of the Breast Cancer Partnership and its African American Task Force.
