SUBJECT: Request for Consideration to Develop a Virtual Library at the Hercules
Swim Center to Serve the Residents of Hercules
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
AUTHORIZE the Contra Costa County Librarian to work with the City of Hercules to provide specific
library services to the residents of Hercules by creating a Virtual Library at the Computer Center inside
Hercules Swim Center.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
One time start up costs for this program are $13,200 and annual ongoing casts are $19,400. Funding is
included in FY 2001102 Library Budget.
BACKGROUND
Contra Costa County Library and the City of Hercules have been working together for the past year to
improve library services for the City of Hercules, the only city in the County without a library.
By installing two computers at the Swim Center connected to the Contra Costa County Library,
residents will be able to request materials, access the library databases, search the Internet and connect
to the library's home page. In addition, residents can access the library catalog from home, work or
schools and can request that materials be delivered to the Swim Center for pick-up. A library delivery
service will be provided which will allow residents to pick up their materials at the Swim Center. A
library book drop will be installed to allow residents to also return their library materials at the site.
The following objectives are planned for FY 2001-2002:
• Select and purchase equipment and furniture for the Virtual Library
• Install and test equipment and service
• Install a book drop outside the Hercules Swim Center
• Develop Public Relations materials with the assistance of the Hercules Library Commission and the
Friends of Hercules Library
• Publicize the service to Hercules residents
• Start the new service by March 1, 2002
