ACCEPT report from the Director of US Veterans Affairs, Concord Vets Center on last year's Stand Down for Homeless Veterans and their Families. 2. CONSIDER an offer of County support for the East Bay Stand Down proposed for September 7,8,9, 10,2002. 3. REFER the coordination of County support to the Families and Human Services Committee of the Board. BACKGROUND: For the last two years, the U.S.Veterans Affairs Office, Concord Veterans Center has been a co-sponsor of an event that addresses the problems of homeless veterans and their families in the East Bay. The Stand Down brings homeless veterans together with a comprehensive array of services, including legal services, social services, housing, veterans' services, substance abuse treatment, and health care. The four-day event gives veterans the ability to seek the services that they need in one place and the opportunity to bond and share experiences with each other. It is an intense and effective way to provide support to an underserved group of people. County staff and department heads, including Supervisor Gerber, Director of General Services Bart Gilbert, and Veterans Services Officer Gary Villalba participated last year. The Director of the U.S. Veterans Affairs Office has a video that was produced after last year's Stand Down and he would like to share that with the Board. As next years East Bay Stand Down is in the planning stages, there is an opportunity to involve representatives from County offices, such as Mental Health, Veterans Services, and Homeless Programs to help promote and develop this event. In light of September 110',the needs of veterans and their families should be of highest priority and this program gives the County a powerful and effective means to assist homeless veterans.
