Gattopin' Gazette 1$ November, 2000 13 Professional and up-coming bullriders share one common factor, and that is a need far sponsorship. Bullriding is an expen- sive sport. It is expensive for bull owners to maintain their stock. Feed, vet bills, fencing, practice arena, are costly. The average price to ride a bull is$15 to$20 for the first ride while the price : varies for the second ride. Most bull owners will only allow one ride per bull. Each rider needs his or her own equipment includ- ing a bullriding vest, rope, chaps, spurs, bootstraps and glove.Of course the equipment is available at all practice arenas. The pros need their own equipment, and the fancier batwinged chaps and clothing used for rodeo. All bullriders travel to the various rodeos that have costly entry fees.I overheard some bullriders saying,"If you have money, you aren't a bullrider," and laughing. There is something clean and pure about this sport.Some- thing timeless and primal.A human sitting astride a large beast for a few seconds attempting balance and relaxation and hoping for a reasonable dismount. The rider is taking all of the risk while the bull is in a natural state basically untouched by the human attempting to stay balanced with his bucking motions. Yet, in the midst of the changes, sits La Jolla Equestrian Center owned by Alice and Andy Giovannim who are nearing the " end of the final stages of a complete remodeling and renovation project that has produced one of the finest,if not the finest,eques- trian center in the Ba Area. As a tribute to the horse, I t E Bay q y doing Giovannini have erected a monument toe equine and b doin so have marked the continuing, longterm presence of equine along the valley road. Alice said the idea came to her as she and Andy were stroll- ing through San Francisco art galleries on one of their infrequent days off.The horse statue was in one of the galleries and both she and Andy knew immediately that the it belonged at La Jolla. It was the final touch to their year-long renovation project. All who have seen it agree. It is as if the statue was created to grace the La Jolla grounds and to compliment the distinctive willow and cy- press trees, flowers, fountain and of course the beautiful horses romping in the turnout paddocks or exercising in the covered and outdoor arenas. When you are out and about take a drive down Tassajara " and take a peek at the East Bay's newest tribute to our beloved equine, and Gallopin'Gazette thanks Alice and Andy on behalf the entire horse community for the beautiful addition to our horse world.
