In the Matter of the Contra Costa County
Building Inspection Department staff providing
assistance to the City of Napa during the
recently declared state of emergency ) RESOLUTION NO. 2000/472
Whereas September 3, 2000 an earthquake of 5.2 on the Richter scale
jolted the City of Napa and caused over $60 million in damages, in response to the
Governor's office of Emergency Services and the California Building Officials'
(CALBO) Disaster Coordinator request for Mutual Assistance, the Contra Costa
County Building Department sent thirteen (13) inspectors to assist with the
damage assessment inspections, and
Whereas there were over 5,000 homes and commercial structures damaged.
The Building Inspectors had to go door to door to perform damage assessment
inspections. The Inspectors from Contra Costa County Building Inspection
Department performed 90 to 100 inspections a day; and
Whereas the Inspectors worked the entire week of September 11, 2000 to
September 17, 2000, including Saturday and Sunday to assist in providing timely
inspection to the residents of the City of Napa; and
Whereas this was an opportunity for the Inspection team from Contra Costa
County's Building Inspection Department to utilize the skills needed to conduct
damage assessment and respond to emergencies, therefore making them better
prepared to handle emergencies for the residents of Contra Costa County; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Board takes great
pleasure in congratulating the Building Inspection Department for their quick and
timely response Mutual Aid and Assistance to the City of Napa during the recently
declared state of emergency.
