HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10032000 - C9-C11 C7 Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, State of California IN THE MATTER OF DECLARING ) OCTOBER,DOMESTIC VIOLENCE i AWARENESS MONTH&ZERO) i TOLERANCE FOR DOMESTIC ) VIOLENCE MONTH ) R2000147I WHEREAS, domestic violence Is a serious crime that ,affects people of all races, ages, Income levels, sexes, and the community at large; WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual's privacy, dignity, security, and humanity, due to the systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, and economic control or abuse; WHEREAS, the total health care, legal, and law enforcement costs of family violence are estimated in the hundreds of millions each year; WHEREAS, Battered Women's Alternatives Is the catalyst that breaks the generational cycle of abuse and rebuilds lives; WHEREAS, Battered Women's Alternatives, as a California leader in the domestic violence arena for over 20 years, mobilizes the community through a variety of collaborative efforts to provide domestic violence services in Contra Costa County serving over 12,x00 clients annually; WHEREAS, Battered Women's Alternatives is a multi-service agency which provides a broad range of services, including a 24-hour crisis line; shelter, legal advocacy; children and teen programs, counseling, support groups; employment assistance, batterer's treatment program, emergency response teams working in collaboration with police departments,and prevention programs, WHEREAS, Battered Women's Alternatives works to unite the community to stand against domestic violence; WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has implemented a resolution for Zero Tolerance for Domestic Violence, NOW, THEREFORE, In recognition of the important work done by the Battered Women's Alternatives, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim the month of October 2000 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Zero Tolerance for Domestic Violence Month and urges all citizens to actively participate In the scheduled activities and programs sponsored by Battered Women's Alternatives to work toward the elimination of domestic violence. ' '° C• t t Peputy Clerk �Combea sg�d& gwxtyj IN THE MATTER DECLARING RESOLUTION NO. 2000/466 OCTOBER AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH„ IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, breast cancer is a devastating public health crisis, the most common cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S. and California; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa has one of the highest incidence rates of breast cancer in the state. Rates for African American, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanics and Caucasian women are all above the state average; and WHEREAS, early detection --- through self-breast examinations and mammograms --- is the best way to improve a woman's chances for survival against breast cancer; WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Breast Cancer Partnership is a coalition formed by community -based organizations, breast cancer survivors, advocates, health care providers and county agencies to make breast cancer screening a community priority; WHEREAS, the Partnership would like to honor the special efforts of community organizations to educate and raise awareness of low income and underserved women about the importance of breast health check-ups; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim the month of October, 2000 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." Deputy Clerk In the Matter of Recognition of the) Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley) RESOLUTION NO, 2000/470 Whereas, the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley have established themselves as one of the most innovative leading veteran organizations in the Tri-Valley area, and Whereas, the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley lead the community in supporting a positive image for our country's Viet Nam Veterans, which they have accomplished through many efforts including the All Wars Memorial, the Danville 4' of July Parade, and the County's most well attended Memorial Day ceremonies; and Whereas, the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley recognized the need to serve the 7,000 displaced, needy and homeless veterans of the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. The organization pioneered the establishment of the East Bay Stand Down in 1999 and again in 2000; and Whereas, through the East Bay Stand Down 2000, the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley aided 320 displaced, homeless and needy veterans. The needy veterans received legal assistance, social security assistance, medical assistance, substance abuse recovery assistance and many other services. Many of the veterans were able to go directly into recovery and housing programs, received clean legal records, went to work, and many other tangible, direct benefits which will help them to become productive citizens again; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CONTRA COSTA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS recognizes and commends the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley for their leadership in the East Bay Stand Down; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley are commended for the many community services they are providing and in doing so bring positive recognition to the Viet Nam Veterans in our community.
