BACKGROUND: CASA volunteers are appointed by a Juvenile Court Judge or Commissioner, to be a "Court Appointed Special Advocate" for children who are abused, neglected or lack a home. The volunteers attend all court hearings that affect the rights or welfare of the child; monitor the progress of the case as it moves through the system; identify resource needs and help locate appropriate resources; and meet privately with the child approximately once per week. The CASA Program has assisted the County courts for 15 years and, annually, submits a request for continued funding to the Judicial Council of California. Broadway, #204 Walnut Creek, CA 94596-3756 Dear Ms. Hill-Coillot, On behalf of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, I am pleased to offer my support for the Court Appointed Advocates (CASA) program's application for funding from the judicial Council of California. The CASA Program has been a valuable community service for over 15 years in Contra Costa County. The utilization of volunteers as advocates for abused children is an innovative, unique and cost-effective process in a time of dwindling funding sources. The Board will continue to support this project with in-kind office space because of CASA's vital community service to children. CASA is the designated court child advocates organization for Contra Costa County's abused children. I encourage full support and funding of this fine program. Sincerely, DONNAGE Rr Chair, Board of Supervisors
