I am pleased that Fire Station No. 87 in Pittsburg will soon open to same the cor=uniry- T w=t to
commend the City of Pittsburg, the County and Congressman George Miller for working so diligently to
W
make this station a reality. The joint efforts to build this station involved the donation of federal land,
City Redevelopment Agency revenues, and disinct development fees.
As You know, I w-as involved in the early plunnintr for this facility when I served as the 5d'District
0
S Lrpemi 'sor, and I was deeply honored when the Board of Supervisors named this station the"Tom
Torlak:son Fire Station" on December 11, 1996.
It would, however, give me.greater pleasure to see this station re-n-cu-ned the"John Fields Fire Station." It
is witlL tremendous pride that I join Supervisor Joe Canciamilla in recognizing John Fields,a senior fire-
fightcr and affirmative action officer who sm-ved wltl great distinction for the Rivm-view Fire Districi for
27 years until he died in 1998.
I believe it is fitting that this station he named after John fields in recognition of hii outstanding and
dedicated service to the public. Ile took tremendous pride in his profession serving as an excellent role
model for the entire co=urary, particularly our young people. He was deeply respected and highly
regarded by his colleagues and by the people he so diligently served. John Fields and what he
represented is the source of grcat pride for the community of Pittsburg mid the many professional
firefthrers he worked with over the years.
I will bi honored to introduce az Assembly Resolution honori ig Mr.Fields when the Legislaturc
reconvenes in January and welcome an opportmiry to present the framed resolution for display at the fire
