BACKGROUND On December 17, 1996 the Board of Supervisors adopted a Board Order naming Fire Station No.87 the"Tom Torlakson Fire Station". State Assemblyman Tom Torlakson and Supervisor Joe Canciamilla began meeting in late 1999 to re-name Fire Station No.87 in honor of John Fields. Senior Firefighter John Fields was hired as a Firefighter in the Pittsburg Fire Department in August 1971. He was the first Black Firefighter in Pittsburg,and after consolidation with the Antioch Fire Department in 1973,the first Black Firefighter in the Riverview Fire District. In 1980,John Fields was promoted to Senior Firefighter. He was noted as being a professionally motivated and department oriented employee who sought excellent levels of service to the public and exhibited a professional approach to his own position. He was particularly noted for having a strong rapport and interest with the young people in the community. John Fields died in 1998. The joint efforts to build this station involved the donation of federal land, City Redevelopment Agency revenues,and disinct development fees. As You know, I w-as involved in the early plunnintr for this facility when I served as the 5d'District 0 S Lrpemi 'sor,and I was deeply honored when the Board of Supervisors named this station the"Tom Torlak:son Fire Station" on December 11, 1996. It would,however, give me.greater pleasure to see this station re-n-cu-ned the"John Fields Fire Station." It is witlL tremendous pride that I join Supervisor Joe Canciamilla in recognizing John Fields,a senior fire- fightcr and affirmative action officer who sm-ved wltl great distinction for the Rivm-view Fire Districi for 27 years until he died in 1998. I believe it is fitting that this station he named after John fields in recognition of hii outstanding and dedicated service to the public. Ile took tremendous pride in his profession serving as an excellent role model for the entire co=urary,particularly our young people. He was deeply respected and highly regarded by his colleagues and by the people he so diligently served. John Fields and what he represented is the source of grcat pride for the community of Pittsburg mid the many professional firefthrers he worked with over the years. I will bi honored to introduce az Assembly Resolution honori ig Mr.Fields when the Legislaturc reconvenes in January and welcome an opportmiry to present the framed resolution for display at the fire station when it opens to the public.
