When the explorers looked east across San Francisco Bay they saw what they called "Contra Costa" (the opposite shore). Development quickly followed, spurred by favorable access to waterways and rich farmlands. Transcontinental rail service arrived in the late 18005 solidifying the area's position as a transporta- tion lhub. During World War ll the county's seaports became thriving centers for shipbuilding, munitions and troop staging. Historically, petroleum products dominated industrial development in West County, with steel and paper coming out of Central County, and agricultural products in East County. During the 1950's, freeway con- struction was moving at a fastpaceand Contra Costa transformed into a suburban setting. Today, new industries are replacing old; among them bioscience, computer software, and tel ecommu n i cations.
