HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12071999 - P1 --�.` ,� ,` ,� ,, `� 1\� �, s ,� �i '� `� '�, �� �, �� �` ,� vs ?aqsx� IN THE MATTER OF COMMENDING CENTRAL CONTRA COSTA SANITATION DISTRICT FOR RECEIPT OF AN IPM INNOVATOR AWARD FOR THEIR EFFORTS TO ENHANCE LOCAL WATER QUALITY AND REDUCE PESTICIDES IN WASTEWATER RESOLUTION NO.99/613 WHEREAS, local water quality and the reduction of pesticides in wastewater are of major importance to the citizens of California, Contra Costa County and the greater San Francisco Bay region. WHEREAS, Integrated Pest Management(IPM)is an ecosystem based strategy,utilizing a variety of management techniques designed to control pests while minimizing impacts on the environment. WHEREAS, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District has demonstrated a leadership role by being the first wastewater treatment facility in California to take a preventative approach by promoting IPM as a means to reduce pesticides wastewater. WHEREAS, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District has developed partnerships with local hardware stores and nurseries to promote the use of less-toxic(IPM)products. For these partnerships they provided employee training from an IPM expert and developed fact sheets and displays. WHEREAS, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District, as part of their public education efforts has created an IPM demonstration garden with interpretive signs and a garden story board at their household hazardous waste collection facility. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County. congratulates For receiving statewide recognition for its leadership in public outreach by receiving an IPM innovator's Awar& Passed by the unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 7'h day of December, 1999. Whereas, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an ecosystem-based strategy, utilizing a variety, of management techniques designed to control pests while minimizing impacts on the environment. Whereas,Aquatic Outreach Institute has demonstrated a leadership role by developing outreach programs on creeks, wetlands,and watersheds for the general public and educators in the San Francisco Bay Area Whereas,Aquatic Outreach Institute's'Kids in Gardens'program educates teachers to provide school programs focusing on using IPM techniques in home and school gardens with the goal of reducing pesticide use within the community. Whereas,Aquatic Outreach Institute's 'Teacher Action Grants'program, last year helped to provide 1,300 kindergarten through twelfth grade students with organic gardening and other water pollution prevention projects. These projects reached approximately 10,000 students, volunteers, parents and community, members in Contra Costa County. Whereas,Aquatic Outreach Institute's'Watching Out Watersheds'program assists educators working in low-income areas to involve their students in pollution-prevention projects such as developing organic and native plant gardens at their schools. Participants are given an extensive binder that contains information on pesticide reduction activities that can be conducted at school and in the home. Whereas,Aquatic Outreach Institute has developed a native plant garden on UC Berkeley's Richmond Field Station to demonstrate the values of using native plants. Whereas,Aquatic Outreach Institute sponsors conferences for educators and the general public on'Teaching About Creeks, Wetlands and Watersheds'. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, congratulates Aquatic Outreach Institute for receiving statewide recognition of its leadership in promoting responsible stewardship of our aquatic resources by receiving an IPM Innovator's Award from the California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Pesticide Regulation. The Board,further commends the Aquatic Outreach Institute for its innovative public outreach efforts to preserve the aquatic resources of Contra Costa County and the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
