SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION($)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: Present the 1999 departmental Award For Excellence to the Department Of Information Technology, Steven Steinbrecher, Chief Information Officer. BACKGROUND: The Board of Supervisors, in 1985, established a program for recognizing outstanding performance by County departments. In December 1985 and each year thereafter, the Board has recognized a department with the Award for Excellence. The accomplishments for the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) have been varied and highly visible throughout the year. DoIT has successfully completed the Countywide Year 2000 Project, a huge undertaking by itself, involving the implementation of a public awareness campaign; a business continuity and disaster recovery plan; the wide area network recovery; and the statewide external interface remediation of 100-plus interfaces between the County, the State of California and the Federal government. The innovative staff of DoIT designed and produced an extremely successful executive level "Technology Faire," and provided a future technology presentation for the Middle Management Retreat in conjunction with the County Institute for Policy and Innovation. DoIT worked very closely with the Public Works Department to market the County's new Geographic Information System (GIS), which resulted in its obtaining $600,000 in funding to move the GIS forward. DoIT supports the community through the highly successful "Cisco Kids" high school internship program with the Antioch Unified School District. The department enjoys an outstanding reputation throughout the state and the staff is active in professional associations statewide. Steven Steinbrecher, Chief Information Officer, and the entire staff deserve recognition for the commitment and energy they bring to their duties.
