HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10201998 - P2 Board of Supervisors Of Contra Costa County,State of California PARTNERSHIP FOR A } DRUG-AND ALCOHOL-FREE } CONTRA COSTA COUNTY } HANDS OFF HALLOWEEN } CAMPAIGN } RESOLUTION NO. 98/534 WHEREAS, for what was once a children's holiday,Halloween has tuned into a drinking occasion; and WHEREAS,alcohol companies have capitalized upon this social trend through the utilization of Halloween images in their making campaigns which are appealing to children and young adults; and WHEREAS,the use of the images of ghosts,pumpkins, and witches sends a message to youth that drinking alcohol is a part of Halloween; and WHEREAS, Hands Off Halloween is an annual national prevention campaign that attempts to persuade alcohol vendors and bars not to display the Halloween images produced by the alcohol companies; and WHEREAS,the ultimate goal of the campaign is to stop alcohol companies from using children's Halloween images to market their products;and WHEREAS,the Hands Off Halloween Campaign began in Contra Costa County in 1995 and was quick to capture the participation of many local merchants and bar owners; and NOW THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the County Board of Supervisors does hereby support the HANDS OFF HALLOWEEN CANTAIGN, and encourages all citizens to join the effort so we can continue to reverse the association of Halloween with drinking alcohol among our youth; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Board of Supervisors encourages all community members and Cities in Contra Costa to declare Halloween a children's holiday that should not be used to promote alcohol and beer sales. By yt-lerk Board of Supervisors Of Contra Costa County, ,state of California PARTNERSHIP FOR A ) DRUG-AND ALCOHOL-FREE ) CONTRA COSTA COUNTY ) RED RIBBON CELEBRATION ) RESOLUTION NO. 98/535 WHEREAS, tobacco,alcohol and other drug use and abuse has reached pandemic stages in California and throughout the United States; and WHEREAS,it is imperative that community members launch unified and visible tobacco,alcohol and other drug prevention education programs and activities to eliminate the demand for these substances; and WHEREAS,the Substance Abuse Advisory Board,the Partnership Forum Alliance,and the Sherif Department coordinate Contra Costa County Red Ribbon Celebration in cooperation with communities to offer our citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to healthy, drug-free lifestyles; and WHEREAS,the Red Ribbon Celebration will be observed across America during RED RIBBON WEEK,October 23—30, 199$; and WHEREAS,Parents,Youth,Government, Sheriff Department,Business,Law Enforcement,Schools, Religious Institutions,Service Organizations,Social Services,Media,and the General Public will demonstrate their commitment to drug-free communities by wearing and displaying Red Ribbons during this week-long celebration; and WHEREAS, County of Contra Costa further commits resources to ensure the success of the Red Ribbon Celebration and year round tobacco, alcohol and other drug prevention efforts; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the County Board of Supervisors does hereby support October 23—30, 1998 as RED RIBBON WEEK,and encourages all citizens to participate in tobacco,alcohol and other drug prevention programs and activities, making a visible statement and commitment to healthy,drug-free communities in which to raise a generation of drug-.free youth; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Board of Supervisors encourages all community members to pledge: NO USE 0FDRUGS,AND NO ILLEGAL USE OFLEGAL DRUGS.
