HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10141997 - P3 P3 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Declaring October 1997 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS ) MONTH in Contra.Costa County and October 16, ) RESOL UTION NO. 971 528 1997 as BATTERED WOMEN'S ALTERNATIVES'DAY in Honor of the Agency's 201h Anniversary ) WHEREAS, violence perpetrated against intimate partners in Contra Costa County is a serious and deadly problem;and -WHEREAS, domestic violence has a profound emotional and fiscal impact not only on the victims themselves but on local governments, school districts, health and social- service providers, businesses, and community agencies with which the victims and the abusers interact;and WHEREAS, in 1996, 456 calls for assistance due to domestic violence were made to county law enforcement agencies; and Battered Women's Alternatives (BWA), the county's only provider of domestic violence -services, assisted 14,066 -battered women and their families in Contra Costa County;and WHEREAS, for the past .13 years, Contra Costa County has been actively involved in efforts to improve domestic violence response systems and develop strategies for the primary prevention of domestic violence,and WHEREAS, during the past 20 years, BWA has evolved from a volunteer crisis line to_ a comprehensive, multi-service agency for.battered women and their families; and _. WHEREAS, -to celebrate its 20th anniversary, BWA is hosting its Annual Luncheon, `Rebuilding Lives,"in honor of Margaret Lesher, a long-time supporter of BWA. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares _ October 1997 as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH in Contra Costa County and October 16, 1997, as BATTERED WOMEN'S ALTERNATIVES'.DAY in honor of this fine organization's 201h anniversary.
