Dear Colleagues,
This letter is to formalize my resignation from the Contra Costa County Hazardous
Materials Commission. I'm writing this letter with mixed emotions; I am sad to leave the
Commission, yet filled with excitement for what the future will bring with my new job. As many
of you know, I have been looking for a job for many months. Last week, a great opportunity
presented itself which allows me to use all of the knowledge I have acquired during my time as a
Community Activist. I have decided to take a job with Tosco at the Avon refinery. I will now be
working inside the industry fence lines to make a difference on all the issues close to my heart,
rather than outside of the fence line.
As I leave this appointment, I think of the many accomplishments we have had over the
years, the most important was that we created an environment where dialog could occur between
community groups and industrial interests. I urge the Commission to work to bring back that
cooperative relationship, it is the only way to bring about solutions which address all parties
concerns. I also want to urge the Commission to work towards enhancing public participation
where ever possible and to continue the work on Environmental Justice. Keep focused on these
points and keep up the morale. I know it can be difficult at times.
Good luck to all of you! I will not be at the August meeting, but I will come to the
September meeting to say good-bye.
I have enjoyed serving with all of you,
4- 1A;
Sabiha A. Gokcen
