FINANCIAL IMPACT None. REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors voted to reestablish the Fish and Wildlife Committee on December 13, 1994, and the new Fish and Wildlife Committee held its first meeting on February 28, 1996. During its first year, the Committee has devoted the majority of its efforts to organizational matters and information gathering. The Committee anticipates that its focus will shift to reviewing and advising on policy matters in the coming year, and, for this reason, wishes to maximize the amount of information it receives on current projects and policy issues. Currently, the Committee only receives such information when it is sent to the Board and referred to the Committee, and these materials often arrive after the relevant meeting dates or comment deadlines. It is also likely that agencies do not expect the County to have an interest in fish and wildlife issues, and, as a result, neglect to inform the County of such projects. To correct this problem and increase the amount of information available to the Fish and Wildlife Committee as it works to advise the Board of Supervisors, the Committee recommends that the Board of Supervisors issue a letter to relevant agencies stating that the County does have an interest in fish and wildlife issues and that the Fish and Wildlife Committee has been reestablished to advise the Board on such matters. The purpose of this committee is to advise the Board of Supervisors on fish and wildlife issues that may affect the County, make recommendations to the Board for the expenditure of funds accruing in the Fish and Wildlife Propagation Fund as a result of fines collected for fish and game violations, and address issues surrounding the enforcement of fish and game laws and regulations in the County. As the Fish and Wildlife Committee is a primary source of information to the Board of Supervisors on fish and wildlife issues, the Board requests that you notify the Fish and Wildlife Committee of opportunities for comment and review of fish and wildlife issues related to the activities of your agency. You may provide information and notices to the committee at the following address: Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee c/o John Kopchik Community Development Department 651 Pine Street, North Wing, Fourth Floor Martinez, CA 94553-0095 The Board of Supervisors is eager to facilitate public policy for the County that is responsive to fish and wildlife issues, and believes that the Fish and Wildlife Committee can help provide the means to achieve this goal. Your efforts to provide the committee with the information necessary to effectively advise on fish and wildlife issues would be greatly appreciated.' Thank you for your consideration of this matter. If you have any questions regarding this letter, please call John Kopchik, staff to the Fish and Wildlife Committee, at (510) 335-1227.
