SUBJECT: Approve Submission of Funding Application #28-590 to the National Environmental
Education and Training Foundation, Inc.
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDED ACTION:
1. Approve submission of Funding Application #28-590 to the National
Environmental Education and Training Foundation, Inc. (NEETF) , in the
amount of $37,600, for the period from February 1, 1997 through January
31, 1998, for the Communities Organized to Prevent Lead Poisoning
Project.
2. Authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner,
M.D. ) to execute, on behalf of the County, subsequent Standard
Agreement (s) and technical adjustment(s) thereto, for the purposes of
securing grant funds and to implement and carry out the purposes
specified in the grant application.
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Approval of the application for this project will result in $37,600 from NEETF
for the period from February 1, 1997 through January 31, 1998. No County
funds are required.
III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND:
This Project will provide an essential bridge between current lead poisoning
prevention outreach and education activities, and planned community-wide
mobilization and advocacy efforts. The goals of this project are to work in
partnership with neighborhood residents to mobilize community resources, both
individual and institutional, to prevent lead poisoning and improve the health
status and environment of the community; reduce sources of lead in Contra Costa
County; and create sustainable leadership by increasing the ability and
participation of community residents to provide information, training and
action on lead poisoning prevention.
Approval of this application will enable Contra Costa County residents to
mobilize around ways to eliminate lead hazards, an opportunity that otherwise
might be lost.
In order to meet the deadline for submission, the application has been
forwarded to NEETF, but subject to Board approval. Four certified and sealed
copies of this Board Order should be returned to the Contracts and Grants Unit.
