Contra Costa DATE: January 6, 1997 County SUBJECT: Approve Submission of Funding Application #28-590 to the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation, Inc. SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: 1. Approve submission of Funding Application #28-590 to the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation, Inc. (NEETF) , in the amount of $37,600, for the period from February 1, 1997 through January 31, 1998, for the Communities Organized to Prevent Lead Poisoning Project. 2. Authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D. ) to execute, on behalf of the County, subsequent Standard Agreement (s) and technical adjustment(s) thereto, for the purposes of securing grant funds and to implement and carry out the purposes specified in the grant application. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Approval of the application for this project will result in $37,600 from NEETF for the period from February 1, 1997 through January 31, 1998. No County funds are required. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND: This Project will provide an essential bridge between current lead poisoning prevention outreach and education activities, and planned community-wide mobilization and advocacy efforts. The goals of this project are to work in partnership with neighborhood residents to mobilize community resources, both individual and institutional, to prevent lead poisoning and improve the health status and environment of the community; reduce sources of lead in Contra Costa County; and create sustainable leadership by increasing the ability and participation of community residents to provide information, training and action on lead poisoning prevention. Approval of this application will enable Contra Costa County residents to mobilize around ways to eliminate lead hazards, an opportunity that otherwise might be lost. In order to meet the deadline for submission, the application has been forwarded to NEETF, but subject to Board approval. Four certified and sealed copies of this Board Order should be returned to the Contracts and Grants Unit.
