IN THE MATTER OF

on the occasion of their inauguration of )
train service to the new Pittsburg/Bay Point )
BART Station. ) RESOLUTION NO. 97/9

WHEREAS, on July 24, 1962, former District 5 Supervisor Joe Silva, representing
eastern Contra Costa, cast the deciding vote that placed the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid {
Transit (BART) District bond measure before Contra Costa County voters; and
WHEREAS, on November 6, 1962, Contra Costa voters approved the BART bond
measure, which enabled San Francisco and Alameda Counties to meet the state requirement that
a minimum of three counties participate in establishment of the.BART District and avoided an
otherwise indefinite delay to creation of a rapid transit system for the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, On September 1, 1983, the BART Board of Directors approved a BART
Extensions Staging Policy that included a BART extension to eastern Contra Costa in the first
phase of these extensions; and
WHEREAS, on October 25, 1991, the BART District broke ground for the extension i
of rail transit service from the Concord BART Station to eastern Contra Costa which involved
close coordination with Caltrans, Contra Costa County, and the Contra Costa Transportation
Authority; and
WHEREAS, on December 7, 1996, the BART District initiated scheduled train service
to the new Pittsburg/Bay Point BART Station in eastern Contra Costa.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board of
Supervisors congratulates the BART District Board of Directors on the occasion of the
inauguration of service to the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART Station, thereby bringing rail transit
service to a part of the Bay Area that was so pivotal to the creation of the BART system 35
years ago.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON January 14, 1997 by a unanimous vote of the Board
members present. '
