HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09091997 - C28 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Declaring the Week of September 15. 1997 as"National Payroll Week" RESOLUTION NO. 97/ 451,12 WHEREAS, the American Payroll Association and it's 14,000 members have launched a nationwide public awareness campaign that pays tribute to the more than 125 million people who work in the United States and the payroll professionals who support the American system by paying wages, reporting workers earnings and withholding federal employment taxes;and Whereas,the theme of National Payroll Week is"Working for America";and Whereas payroll professionals through out the County of Contra Costa play a key role in maintaining this County's economic health, carrying out such diverse tasks as paying into the unemployment insurance system,providing information for child support enforcement and carrying out tax withholding, reporting and depositing;and Whereas the payroll professionals in the Auditor-Controller, Human Resources and Information Technology departments of Contra Costa County work as a team to accurately and timely issue payroll checks to our 8,400 county employees each month. Annually, more than $367,000,000 in wages are paid to County employees with $63,000,000 in State and Federal taxes withheld,reported and deposited;and Whereas payroll departments play a key role in carrying out such diverse government programs as tax collection,enforcement of fair labor standards and child support obligations, and the administration of social security,unemployment insurance and Medicare tax;and Whereas payroll departments collectively spend more than$15 billion annually complying with federal and state wages and tax laws;and Whereas, the payroll professionals play an increasingly important role ensuring the economic security of American families by helping to identify noncustodial parents and making sure they comply with their child support mandates;and collect from noncustodial parents more than half of all child support payments -more than$8.1 billion over the last 10 years;and Whereas payroll professionals produce accurate paychecks for over 125 million people in American annually which incorporates the entire benefits package in their payroll systems to accurately reflect employee benefits ranging from medical insurance to child care to professional development reimbursements-making sure that the correct amount of tax is withheld every time;and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California DECLARES September 15 through September 19, 1997 as "National Payroll Week" and ENCOURAGE all to support those efforts of the people who work in the County of Contra Costa and who work in the payroll profession. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 9" day of September, 1997.
