BACKGROUND The Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity decided in 1991 to recognize employees that have been positive role models in furthering the objectives of the County's Affirmative Action Program. These employees represent the individual commitment needed to make a significant and meaningful change in their Department and the County. In their current positions they have taken the extra step by showing their leadership ability, dedication, unselfishness, positive attitude, and concern for others. The employees presented to you have been recommended by their Department Head and reviewed and recommended to you for recognition by the Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity. Mr. Weir exceeded the labor force representation in all areas : Females, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian/Pacific Islanders, and American Indians/Alaskan Natives . Mr. Steve Weir is commended for being a role model for other departments, his leadership ability, and his commitment to affirmative action. He attends regularly and has been a very positive influence on the committee. He is also the department' s Affirmative Action Coordinator. Elton' s excellent people skills have been recognized and appreciated by those he has helped. He is able to deal with problems in a very positive manner. This role is sometimes very thankless and we believe he should be recognized for all of his unseen efforts . As a Public Works Maintenance Supervisor he shovels materials, rakes asphalt, prunes bushes , relieves a flagger, coaches a subordinate on a work method or anything else that he believes necessary to help employees learn to work together. We doubt that Elton works at being fair or helpful . It is part of his caring nature. He demonstrates a zest for his job and his > a Operating Engineers Division. Consistently Doug treats his co-workers, subordinates, and customers ' departments with great respect and prompt attention. Doug has the reputation as a problem solver. Doug shows that he cares about the work that he does and the pegple with whom he works . He is a strong advocate for his employees, treats them fairly, takes the time to listen to them, and shows a keen interest in building a good team spirit. Doug shows his awareness of affirmative action in work assignments and training by his treatment of others and support of equal opportunities for all the staff, regardless of sex, ethnicity, age or any cultural difference . He encourages the staff to care about each other as well as getting the job done. Contra Costa County
