CONTRIBUTION TO HOME DELIVERED MEALS PROGRAM
SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENOATION(S)& BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDATION
Accept a donation of $40,000 from Senior Home Delivered Meals of Contra Costa
Inc. for the County Home Delivered Meals Program located in the Department of
Health Services - Public Health Division. These funds were raised specifically to
assist the County Home Delivered Meals Program in purchasing meals and meal
delivery equipment to maintain or expand meal delivery services to the County's
homebound elderly population.
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
This $40,000 contribution allows the County Home Delivered Mdals Program to
deliver approximately 26,600 additional meals to the residences of the county's
homebound elderly this fiscal year, approximately 100 additional meals each day.
III. BACKGROUND:
Including this contribution, Senior Home Delivered Meals of Contra Costa, Inc. has
contributed $132,000 to the County Home Delivered Meals Program since 1991. This
non-profit charitable organization was formed in 1990 by a coalition of public
and private non-profit agencies and advisory councils to raise charitable contribution
for the purchase of additional meals and meal delivery equipment to serve our
county's homebound elders through the County Home Delivered Meals Program.
Participating organizations are: the County Health Services Department's Senior
Nutrition Program; the County Social Services Department's Office on Aging;
the County Advisory Council on Aging; the Senior Nutrition Program Advisory
Council; West County Meals on Wheels Inc.; Family and Community Services Inc.;
and the United Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations, Inc.
The County Home Delivered Meals Program is the largest "Meals on Wheels" type
program in Contra Costa County, delivering over 600 hot nutritious daily meals to
the residences of homebound elderly and AIDS patients.
