It is my desire to inform you on the issue before you vote. You may be aware that the California State Legislature has passed two bills, two years in a row, relating to medical marijuana. They passed with bipartisan support. Both bills were supported by Assemblyman Rainey and Senator Boatwright. These laws would have allowed doctors to prescribe marijuana and would have kept sick people out of jail for using it.These bills were vetoed by Gov. Wilson. We have taken the wording from these two bills, put them into this proposition, and collected 850,000 signatures to qualify the measure for the ballot. Over 45,000 of these signatures came from Contra Costa County. This initiative is supported by over 50 health and service organizations, including the San Francisco Medical Society (representing 9,000 doctors), the California Congress of Seniors, the NAACP, the California Nurses Association, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-- Northern California Chapter, and dozens of AIDS and cancer organizations. In addition, there have been eight newspaper editorial endorsements, including The Contra Costa Times and The Daily Review in Hayward. Although the issue is"medical marijuana" and patients' trust of doctors to appropriately prescribe medicines,it also speaks to us as a people and the direction of our nation. Will it be remembered that we denied sick and dying people a medicine that helps them, for purely political reasons? Then are we prepared to jail these sick people?Who are we?Where are we going? Please join with us as we work to create a more loving and compassionate society, and vote yes on 215. Sincerely, RECEIVEDy SEP 2 3 (996 Lynne Barnes,RN Acting Director Californians for Compassionate Use CLERK BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CONTRA COSTA CO. VOTE YES!
