In the Matter of Declaring October 1996 as )
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH ) RESOLUTION NO. 961434
in Contra Costa County )
WHEREAS, violence perpetrated against intimate partners in Contra Costa County is a serious
problem, and
WHEREAS, in 1993, 5,880 calls for assistance due to domestic violence were made to county
law enforcement agencies, and 69% of incidences reported via these calls involved a weapon of
some type; and
WHEREAS, this violence has a profound emotional and fiscal impact not only on victims
themselves, but on local governments, school districts, health and social service providers,
businesses, and community agencies with which they interact; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County has for the past 12 years been actively involved in innovative
violence prevention efforts, including the development of the Health Services Department's
Guidelines for Domestic Violence Screening and Reporting and recognition of April 1996 as the
first annual countywide "Increase the Peace" month; and
WHEREAS, the Health Services Department will acknowledge National Domestic Violence
Awareness Month in October 1996 by coordinating staff' training on implementation of its
domestic violence guidelines; and
WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Department, the Health Services Department, and Battered Women's
Alternatives (BWA) are coordinating and sponsoring a rally in recognition of October 1996 as
Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares October 1996
as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH in Contra Costa County and calls on
Contra Costa County cities, school districts, health care providers, businesses, and residents of
all ages to lend their support to reducing and preventing domestic violence throughout the
county.
