Please place the attached Resolution on the October 1, 1996 consent calendar for adoption. The
action will extend a 11.76% increase to the class of Student Worker and align Step 1 at the
hourly equivalent of the new $4.75 Federal Minimum Wage. All Departments currently
employing Student Worker will be advised that unless they instruct the Personnel Department
otherwise, all current appointments will be adjusted effective September 1, 1996 to the hourly
rate on the new schedule closest (next highest) to the rate being paid on the old schedule. This
will minimize the overall cost impact of the adjustment.

SUBJECT: New Wage Schedule for Student Worker
On October 1, 1996 the Board of Supervisors will adopt a new salary range for Student Worker
which will increase the current base step from $4.25 per hour to $4.75 per hour. The action
is necessary to comply with the new Federal minimum wage rate of $4.75 effective September
1, 1996.
On the assumption that all current Student Worker appointments have been made at an hourly
pay rate acceptable to both the student-employee and the department and to minimize the cost
impact, Personnel will readjust the step placement of all Student Workers effective September
1, 1996 on the new salary range to that step which is closest (next highest) to the step they
currently receive. The conversion chart listed below will be utilized for adjustments made by
the Personnel Department. If you wish to adjust the rate being paid a Student Worker by an
amount other than that shown, you must send Human Resources a separation document (AK16)
and an AK9 (Personnel Request). Guidelines for appointment are:
1. High School: Steps 1 - 10.
2. Community College or lower division status at a four-year university or college: Steps
11 - 20.
3. Upper Division on post-graduate college or university enrollment: Steps 21 - 30.
