IN THE MATTER OF DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ]
DUKE ELLINGTON MONTH IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY ]
RES. NO. 96\ 433
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County recognizes the contributions to art and culture
made by Duke Ellington; and
WHEREAS, the San Ramon Library Foundation is hosting the Smithsonian's
traveling exhibition "Beyond Category: the Musical Genius of Duke Ellington"; and
WHEREAS, this is the exhibition's only stop in California; and
WHEREAS, the 3,000 square foot exhibit traces Ellington's roots from his musical
beginnings in Washington D.C., to his success in New York, to his worldwide
travels; and
WHEREAS, the city of San Ramon is celebrating the Fife and times of Duke
Ellington with a series of free concerts, lectures, exhibits and tea dances
throughout the month of October; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra
Costa County joins the City of San Ramon in declaring the month of October "Duke
Ellington Month" in Contra Costa County, State of California.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of those Supervisors present on
October 1 , 1996. ,
hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of an action taken and
entered on the minutes of said Board of Supervisors.
