RECOMMENDED ACTION Authorize the District Attorney to sign personal services contracts, and any amendments or modifications thereof, with Paula Lyons for the amount of$ 59,474 for the period January 1, 1996 through June 30, 1997 and with Dominique Furst for the amount for$ 83,341 for the period January 1, 1996 through December 31, 1997 for prosecution services (budgeted). II. FINANCIAL IMPACT None. Approval of these jobsharing contracts and filling their positions behind them with two fixed terms results in no added County cost. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND Consistent with Board guidance,the District Attorney has created a program for attorneys which permits attorneys to jobshare half-time and provides the Office with two additional attorneys with no added cost or positions created by the Board of Supervisors. Under this innovative program, participating attorneys resign their positions for two years and are then rehired under the County's existing reemployment provisions. During the participation period,two fixed term attorneys are hired into the deputies' vacated positions. After the end of participation period, it is anticipated that at least two attorneys will want to participate in the program, and the earlier group will be rehired into their positions. In the event that no other attorneys want to participate at that time,two fixed term positions will be left vacant for the deputies' rehire. IV. CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION Failure to approve these contracts will make it impractical for the District Attorney's Office to offer a jobsharing program to attorneys. In this case,these new mothers would be forced to choose between leaving their newborns after their period of family leave to return to full-time employment or to terminate their County employment, depriving the District Attorney's Office of the expertise of these two valuable long-time employees.
