IN THE MATTER OF HONORING ] RESOLUTION NO. 96/54
UNDERSHERIFF RUSSELL F. PITKIN ]
OFFICE OF THE SHERIFF ]
WHEREAS, Russell F. Pitkin has been employed with the Office of the Sheriff, Contra Costa
County for thirty-one and one-half years; and
WHEREAS, Russell F. Pitkin has provided outstanding leadership during his employment,
exhibiting intelligence, innovation, and loyalty, and a burning passion for the Department; and
WHEREAS,Russell F. Pitkin, having always been an enthusiastic supporter of higher education,
holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration and attended the 99th Session of the F.B.I.
Academy in Quantico, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Russell F. Pitkin was hired by the Office of the Sheriff as a Deputy Sheriff and was
promoted up through the ranks to Undersheriff; and
WHEREAS,Russell F. Pitkin is the only member of the Office of the Sheriff to have been assigned
to the Investigation Division at every rank, including Deputy, Sergeant,Lieutenant, and Captain, for
a total of sixteen years; and
WHEREAS, Russell F. Pitkin was instrumental in the implementation of the transition from the
old jail to a direct-supervision jail; and
WHEREAS, Russell F. Pitkin was involved in the felony investigation involving members of the
Symbionese Liberation Army,which resulted in arrest warrants for the kidnappers of Patty Hearst;
and
WHEREAS,Russell F. Pitkin has chosen to retire as of March 16, 1996;
NOW THEREFORE,we,the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, do hereby recognize,
congratulate, and commend Undersheriff Russell F. Pitkin, and acknowledges with appreciation
the many years of service of Mr. Pitkin in the field of law enforcement and extends to him best
wishes for a happy retirement.
PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 20th day of February, 1996.
