SUBJECT: FEDERAL LSCA - MURL GRANT
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Authorize the County Librarian to apply for and accept Federal LSCA - MURL funding in the amount of
$9,661 for the period of November 30, 1995 through September 30, 1996 to strengthen the Concord Library's
role as an information resource responding to the most critical information needs in the region. Grant funds
will be used to acquire resources for small business people, jobseekers and career changers, students,
consumers and for individuals for whom English is not the primary language.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
No matching funds are required. The Library will contribute selection and processing work and must share
these resources through established networking channels. Library staff will cooperate with staff from other
California MURL Grant libraries in the design of a Regional Collection Development Plan.
BACKGROUND:
The Library Service and Construction Act-Major Urban Resource Library Grant provides that when total
funding of the act exceeds a designated level, a portion of the excess be divided among library jurisdictions
with cities of over 100,000 population. Concord qualified for the first time in 1984/85. This application is for
eleventh year funding. All LSCA-MURL Grants are distributed through the California State Library in
accordance with a State plan. The proposed use of the funds is consistent with identified local and regional
needs.
