The Board expressed concern about the possibility that lack of funding for the VA replacement hospital at Travis Air Force Base may result in cancellation of the project. In your letter, the Board proposed avenues through which the Contra Costa County health care system may be able to offer services to veteran patients. I assure you that the Travis project, continues to receive unqualified support at the highest levels of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Although the outcome of the final budget deliberations is still uncertain, the VA continues to move forward with plans for the new hospital. Therefore, it is premature to begin negotiations for alternative health care delivery for our veteran patients. If funding for the Travis project isnot approved, however,we will consider contingency plans at that time. On-behalf of the Secretary,-I wish to express my appreciation to you for your advocacy on behalf of veterans in Contra Costa County. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact Sheldon Fine,Acting Director,VA Northern California Health Care System, at (510)372-2010. In your letter, you expressed concern over the proposed cancellation of funding for the VA replacement hospital at Travis Air Force Base. Your letter also offered several proposals for providing health care to veterans in the Contra Costa County health care system. Secretary Brown continues to express his strong and unwavering support for the Travis project. Although funding is uncertain at this time,he is actively advocating for the project to be included in the final version of the President's budget. Until such time as a final decision is made, we are moving forward with our design plans at Travis. Therefore,it is premature at this time to begin negotiations for alternative health care delivery for our veteran patients. I appreciate the Board of Supervisors' advocacy on behalf of veterans in Contra Costa County. If funding for the Travis project is not approved, we will consider contingency plans at that time, both for the short- and long term. Thank you for your letter and your support. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact Brian J. O'Neill, M.D., Chief of Staff, at (510) 372-2018.
