DISTRICT I
Lao Family Community Development: Lao Family was one of two ethnic specific programs
funded to provide tobacco prevention and education in Contra Costa County. Lao Family
provided services in the Southeast Asian community in West County. This project worked with
Southeast Asian youth in elementary through high school, as well as hard to reach out-of-school
youth and their families. The program worked to teach peer and family educators on issues of
tobacco addiction and secondhand smoke so that they could educate others in their community.
Lao Family reached over 3000 people in the West County Southeast Asian community with their
anti-tobacco message.
United Concilio West: Was one the other ethnic specific program that was funded to provide
tobacco specific education in the West County Latino community. UCW developed and
implemented the Teatro that performed for us here today. This group has received much
recognition for efforts in tobacco prevention and also in working with high risk youth. Please
see attached newspaper article.
Gateway Project: Gateway developed a Tobacco Prevention Team of students from El Cerrito
High School that worked:on increasing the awareness of teachers, students of El Cerrito, and
other peers throughout the'West Contra Costa School District about tobacco addiction. These
students worked with younger students and a group of students developed a workshop, which
was presented at the Contra Costa County Youth Summit 94', that educated youth about tobacco
