I. RECOMMENDATION:
AGREE to APPROVE appointment of the following applicant to the
Advisory Board for the Center for Health in North Richmond.
Please see the attached application for more detail on the
qualification of this candidate.

II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None
III. REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION:
A Center for Health in North Richmond is being established
pursuant to the settlement agreement with the General Chemical
Corporation following a major toxic release incident from
their facility in July 1993 . The Center for Health will
provide a range of primary care and public health services,
community health promotion and prevention programs, and other
community-based projects to North Richmond and neighboring
communities in San Pablo and Richmond. An Advisory Board to
the Center for Health has already been established to work
with the Health Services Department to design the Center and
provide continuing oversight and advice regarding program
operations. The Advisory Board will also make recommendations
to the Health Services Department and the Board of Supervisors
on emerging health priorities and concerns within the
community. It will act as a link with other key community
organizations and groups in the area to ensure open
communication and encourage coordination of local efforts to
improve health in the area. This applicant fills the
remaining vacancy on the Board.

EXPERIENCE `
Family and Children's Trust Committee (FACT), Contra Costa County, Vice-Chair, Member - Rated and
assessed grant proposals requesting funding. Learned about human services offered in Contra Costa County.
Program Monitoring Subcommittee-revised program monitoring procedures for implementation during site visits,
conducted site visits,prepared post-site visit reports. Membership Subcommittee-prepared letter of invitation for
membership to local non-profit centers, mental health agencies, schools, public organizations, and churches.
Recommended reorganization of committee membership representation. (FACT is a committee appointed by the
Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors for the allocation of funds from the State Children and Family Child
Abuse Prevention Funds. Services of these local non-profit agencies include: programs for assistance and prevention
of child abuse and substance abuse for adults and families.)
City of EI Cerrito,Recreation Department, Preschool Assistant-Supervised twenty children age three to five
years:_Supervised play and art activities. . Assisted.teacher in.acquiring materials for lessons, including library -
research for age appropriate books pertaining to topic of each lesson. Led group storytime activities. Assisted in
preparing the following day's lesson. Advised parents of child's progress and consulted with teacher and parents
as necessary regarding any unusual behavior exhibited by a child. Substitute Childcare Counselor-Supervised
groups of twelve to sixteen children, age five to twelve in an after-school program. Researched art activities,
supplied materials and supervised project.
City of EI Cerrito,Recreation Department,Clerk-Operated the computer registration system for children and
adults in recreation classes: Collected cash during swim hours. Fulfilled general clerical duties. Supervised rental
facilities during private functions.
Marin School,Teaching Assistant-Assisted teacher in carrying out-the day's lesson. Translated for and tutored
a Spanish speaking student. Researched and acquired age-appropriate books and records to be used in multicultural
and whale lesson plans.
Lawrence Hall of Science, Intergenerational Science Program, Tutor - Led groups of eight third and fourth
graders in Science activities. Worked at Martin Luther King, Elementary School, Richmond and at a San Pablo
School.
Richmond Public Library,Literacy for Every Adult Program(L.E.A.P.),Tutor-Attended training workshops
covering such topics as teaching the adult learner,using computers to teach reading,and recognizing dialects outside
the mode of standard English. Created layout for L.E.A.P. monthly newsletter.
