Re: Jersey Island Bridge Death
Dear Members of the Board:
Recently my office was contacted by the parents of Edward
O'Donovan, a seventeen year old young man who was killed while
participating in an activity that- has been going on for dozens of
years at the Jersey -Island •Bridge. As you are no doubt already
aware, it is, a ritual for young men and women to venture out to the
Jersey Island Bridge to dive or jump from the bridge into the
waters of Dutch Slough. Eddie O ' Donovan was engaged in this
activity on the day he died, August 20, 1994 .
Eddie's death is not the first needless tragedy that has occurred
in this way. Residents in the area speak of countless accidents
and near tragedies that Occur year in and year out. Generations of
young men and women have been exposed to this danger and despite
knowledge, the County has done little or nothing to prevent it.
The issue as the parents see it, is whether or not the County will
take affirmative action to prevent another senseless tragedy from
occurring to another family and to another young man or woman and
to spare another family from the grief that Mr. and Mrs. O ' Donovan
have suffered. Please don't let Eddie ' s death serve as an empty
warning. The County can and should protect future generations from
endangering their lives and limbs while participating in what has
been for years an activity to which the County has turned a blind
eye.
Eddie O'Donovan's family implores you to take whatever steps are
necessary to protect the sons and daughters of other Contra Costa
