HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11071995 - C27 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Declaring November 11, 1995, ) as FRANCES & ANTHONY COSTA DAY in ) RESOLUTION NO. 951530 Contra Costa Counter ) WHEREAS, Frances & Anthony Costa have been selected for the 1995 Gifts of Life Award by the Mt Diablo Hospital Foundation for their outstanding volunteer endeavors; and WHEREAS, the Costas'roots run deep in Contra Costa County, having both grown up in the Concord area and attended Mt. Diablo High School, and WHEREAS, after high school, Frances studied to become a nurse and worked for the U.S. Armed Services at the Presidio and then at Kaiser, and Anthony enlisted with the Marines and fought in World War 11 where he was survived the Baatan Death March and three years and one- half years as a Japanese Prisoner of War; and WHEREAS, immediately after Anthony made it home in September 1945, he went directly to visit Frances, whom he had wanted to marry since high school, and soon the couple were engaged; and WHEREAS, the Costas made their home in Concord, and Frances was hired as the Nursing Director at Concord Community Hospital where she organized the first accreditation inspection, which later became the Joint Commission, and served on it until 1949, and Anthony meanwhile began a 30-year career with the City of Concord; and WHEREAS, the Costas began volunteering at Mt. Diablo Hospital after both were struck with serious illnesses and wanted to give back to the hospital that has helped them recover; and WHEREAS, Frances is a founder of the Heart-to-Heart Visitors, gives communion to hospitalized Catholics, works in the Cancer Center Library, and performs blood pressure screenings, and Tony does his share of volunteering by delivering groceries to shut-ins; and WHEREAS, the Mt. Diablo Hospital is fortunate to have two such wonderful volunteers as Frances and Anthony Costa, and we are grateful for their compassion and dedication to serving the citizens of the county. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares November 11, 1995, as FRANCES & ANTHONY COSTA DAY in Contra Costa County. PASSED AND ADOPTED ON November 7, 1995, by a unanimous vote of the Board members present. Mark DeSaulnier Jim Vicers.
