While driving north on San Ramon Valley Boulevard approaching the stop light on the corner of Pine Valley Road, I was stopped suddenly in my tracks to find a baby fawn sitting in the middle of the lane looking at my approaching car in terror and confusion. Standing alongside the road was the mother of this fawn looking helplessly at her young one. Apparently, the fawn's leg was broken, obviously an injury resulting from an automobile. Immediately, I pulled my car along the side of the road and turned my hazard lights on to warn the approaching car coming rapidly behind me. To my horror, the car never slowed down, ignoring my warning signals and proceeded to run right over this defenseless baby fawn leaving it to die while the mother looked on. I was shocked and very upset. I am a twenty-one year old resident of the San Ramon/Danville area and in my entire life of living in this community, I have seen these innocent deer and other wildlife being killed along this road and nothing being done about it. Ever since the new Gateway shopping center was built on the corner of San Ramon Valley Boulevard and Alcosta Boulevard, I have noticed that these deer were pushed even farther down towards Pine Valley Road, where I witnessed this tragedy. I am writing you this letter to express my concern for our wildlife. I grew up with these animals and slowly they are dying off because of the construction and lack of awareness of posted speed limits and crossing deer signs. I drive along that road every night and for the past five years of my driving experience, I have witnessed several deer crossings, but never have I injured one. I am aware of the deer and I drive cautiously with my high beams on to avoid killing any wildlife. Obviously other people do not do the same, because I have seen several deer dead along that road. This was the first time I actually had a chance to save an animal from human destruction, but because of the ignorance and lack of awareness in this community, another member of our wildlife is dead, this time a baby fawn. w 44- I am proposing that the posted speed limit change from forty-five miles per hour to forty miles per hour along the block of San Ramon Valley Boulevard between Montevideo Drive and Alcosta Boulevard. With the new Gateway shopping center on the corner, I believe that this would be a safer speed limit, just as it is forty miles per hour where the Diablo Plaza is further north along that road. I am also proposing that we place another deer crossing sign directly across from the First Baptist Church heading north on San Ramon Valley Boulevard towards Pine Valley Road. I am aware that a deer crossing sign already exists along that road for traffic heading south, although shrubbery is blocking visibility of that sign. As I said before, the deer have migrated farther north towards the Pine Valley Road intersection, this was not the first time I've seen a deer dead in this vicinity. .lust to know that these proposals are being considered would free my mind of the frustration and anger that has been building for the past several years of observing dead wildlife along this road. It actually took a tragic situation such as last night for me to realize that maybe I can make a change in the preservation of our wildlife in this community. Please advise me as to what actions I need to take to put these proposals into effect. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Stephanie Williamson 75 Ryegate Place San Ramon, CA 94583 cc: Mayor Hermann Welm
