THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
DATE: January 18, 1994 MATTER OF RECORD
The Board received an invitation from Mark DeSaulnier, Mayor,
City of Concord, 1950 Parkside Drive, MS/01, Concord 94519-2578,
inviting the Board to attend the dedication of the memorial
planting and unveiling of the plaque in memory of Masakazu
Kuriyama who was killed in the vicinity of the Concord BART
Station. The ceremony will be held on Thursday, January 20, 1994,
4 p.m. , on Mesa Street near,Concord BART.
Board members expressed an interest in attending the ceremony
and adjourned the meeting this day to the dedication ceremony and
thence to the Committee meetings as noted on the "i" Page of the
Board Agenda.

On behalf of the Concord City Council, please accept my personal invitation to attend the
dedication of the planting created in memory of Masakazu Kuriyama on Thursday, January 20
at 4:00 p.m. The enclosed flyer provides more detailed information.
The garden design was donated by Messrs. Henry and Richard Matsutani of Matsutani and
Associates, Inc., a landscape design firm in Concord. Funds for the plants and other elements
of the garden have been raised by the community. The Reverend George Toda has agreed to
officiate at the dedication ceremony. We hope you will be able to attend.

landscape architects, who provided pro bono design and supervision of the
memorial planting.
Rev. George T. Toda of the Japanese Christian Church-of Walnut Creek,
who suggested the wording for the plaque.
the Concord City Council who encouraged our volunteer effort.
the City Manager's office, City Clerk, Chair of the City's Human Relations
Commission, and Akiko Irick, who worked with us during this process.
the City Parks Services Division that installed the memorial planting.
the residents of Mesa Street for their patience.
those who support the continuing investigation and resolution of this case:
Concord Police Department, BART, and County Board of Supervisors.
and finally, the community in Concord and throughout the Bay Area that
has shared our sorrow following the tragic death of our beloved Masa.
It is hoped that his death will not be forgotten.
It is hoped that the beauty of this small Japanese garden
will inspire all of us to work toward eliminating violence
against all people in our community.
