Dear Mr. Bacon:
The Board of Supervisors endorses the Walnut Creek fish
ladder project and encourages the Center for Natural
Resources Development to proceed with plans for the fish
ladder to be built on drop structure #1 in the Walnut Creek
channel. We have been anxious and are pleased to hear of
your progress since its inception and introduction to the
Board in early 1991.
We would, as would all of Contra Costa citizens, eventually
like to see Walnut Creek be enhanced to the point where it
will facilitate a strong spawning population of the
endangered winter run Chinook salmon and steelhead. We are
aware that already at least 1,000 Chinook salmon enter
Walnut Creek annually. The fish ladder on this particular
drop structure, one of our largest, will enable the fish to
spawn into the upper reaches of the tributary and to better
habitat.
The highly visual proximity of the fish ladder flanked by
two major highways and with a major business core will no
doubt further educate people on creek ecology and pollution
awareness. One thing that will be certain in years to come
is 'how Contra Costa County was able to preserve salmon
migration even in the face of industrialization. No other
county in California can boast of such diversification of
development, nature preservation and having the privilege of
the continued visitation of this unique species.
