SUBJECT:
ASSISTANCE FOR THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. ACCEPT the report on status of providing assistance to the Human Relations
Commission.
BACKGROUND:
On October 10 and November 14, the Finance Committee heard testimony from
representatives of the Human Relations Commission on the need for assistance. In October
the Committee directed the Community Services staff to work with the Commission's
members to identify revenue sources and prepare necessary applications. This activity is
currently underway.
At the November 14 meeting, Reverend Timmons, Chair of the HRC, presented some
specific and immediate needs of the Commission:
1. a copy machine;
2." flexible access to the copier and available, existing office space in Concord;
and
3. exploration of alternative office space if item two cannot be accomplished.
To date, the Community Services Department staff has secured a copier from the General
Services Department. The copier is being serviced and will be available by November 30.
However, the Community Services Department cannot cover the copier maintenance and
supply costs. These costs can be financed when a revenue source is secured. In the
interim, the County can cover a limited amount of the copier costs.

County Administration and General Services staff are surveying County office space to
determine whether appropriate private space is available for the HRC. In the interim, staff
recommends that the Commissioners notify Cheryl Franklin-Golden at 646-5540 if the office
will be needed during the off-hours. Community Services staff are confident that the
Commissioners' needs can be satisfied if reasonable, advanced notice is given.
The Committee discussed the staff report and adopted the recommendation.
