I also request that the Board of Supervisors pledge that all funds received as a result of the passage of Proposition 172 will be allocated for public safety purposes. Public safety is this City Council's highest priority and yet budget constraints have required reductions in this area. Balancing the 1992-93 budget required the elimination of sixteen positions in the City's Police Department. This comes at a time when the need for increased resources to fund public safety activities has never been higher. Proposition '172 brings the possibility of restoring some of the reductions. Passage of Proposition 172 will not implement a new tax, but simply keeps the current tax rate in effect. Since this will result in new funds targeted for public safety, the City of Concord strongly supports the passage of Proposition 172.
