Dear I4embers of the Board:
You ask the people to vote for you at election time trying
to convince us that :you are. serving in, our. best interest.
You believe you know more than we do what. is best for us.
You don' t seem to understand what many feel is excessive growth
in our - County especially when our streets, roads and freeways.,are
already clogged most of the time and where water is in short
supply during drought years. When cities, communities, environ-
mental groups, EBRIUD say no to Dougherty Valley, it is for a
good reason and you should listen to them, Having Senator Dan
.Boatwrights' help in forcing EBMUD to supply water for the
project was. a slap in the face of all those served by EBMUD.
You must realize that unless EBMUD comes up with additional
..sources of water that rationing will always be a way of life no
one wants. You should be wise enough' to know that. Be assured
that .the drought we have experienced during the past five years
will happen .many times in the future as it has many times, in the
past.
Common sense tells- us, and should be telling you, that
first we develop ar,more sustained water source before additional
major housing developements are considered.. Right now we do not
have the water for the expansions you are proposing over the long
haul. True, our reservoirs are nearly full this year, but no one
knows what it will be like in the future. The more demands for
water there are the .more water :storage."is needed .- that' s common
sense.
Until new water sources are- developed,'. the Dougherty Valley
project should be. put on hold. This is 'what the cities, communities,
environmental groups and EBMUD are -telling you: Your political
future may well.' depend on listening.
Sincerely, .
Mr. Richard H. Porterfield
