HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10261993 - 1.11 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of ) Declaring November 1, 1993 ) "Reverend Keith Spooner Day" ) RESOLUTION NO. 93/634 WHEREAS The Reverend Keith Spooner was raised in Watertown, South Dakota and, fortunately for the people of Contra Costa County, moved to California with his lovely wife Elizabeth (Betty) Spooner where he served as pastor at Clayton Valley Baptist Church until his appointment in June 1963 to the position of Council of Churches Chaplain of Juvenile Hall and, in that capacity, faithfully and expertly served the needs of the children of the County and their parents for over 30 years; and WHEREAS Rev. Spooner brought an unmatched enthusiasm, devotion and level of caring to his work with the children and families of Contra Costa County, focused on "the needs of children as opposed to the deeds of children" and promoted an ecumenical spirit guided by the idea that "essentials" at times are more important than the "fundamentals"; and WHEREAS he utilized an extraordinary amount of creativity in his work with youth by his use of red, yellow and green "signals" as representatives of the children's behavior and attitude and his use of the clown persona "Siberious" to break down communication barriers; and WHEREAS as an American Baptist minister, Rev. Spooner promoted an ecumenical spirit prompted by his belief that all children are inherently good and that religion is best used to teach children what is right with them as opposed to what is wrong with them; and through his ministry at Juvenile Hall, touched the lives of so many children in need of understanding and spiritual and emotional guidance, and successfully recruited, trained and mentored volunteers from all walks of life to help meet the many needs of the children residing at Juvenile Hall; and WHEREAS while he and his wife Betty have three sons, Rev. Spooner is a devoted husband and father and still devotes an extraordinary amount of energy and commitment to thousands of young people in the County over the years; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that November 1, 1993 is DECLARED "Reverend Keith Spooner Day" in Contra Costa County. PASSED AND ADOPTED on October 26, 1993 by unanimous vote of the Board members present. I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a resolution entered on the minutes of the Board of Supervisors on the date aforesaid. We have requested that the Board declare November 1 st as Keith Spooner Day in Contra Costa County,,and in view of his 30 years of service at the Juvenile Hall, it would be wonderful for one or more of you to join us for the evening and present him with a plaque celebrating his ministry. We will be delighted to welcome you that evening in celebration of the various Council of Churches/Contra Costa County ministries, and especially to highlight the good work of Keith Spooner. We will gather to celebrate our common ministry in Contra Costa County, to enjoy a meal prepared by the same caterer as last year(to rave reviews!), to sing and pray and greet old friends. As a special treat, Keith Spooner will speak to us about ministry among troubled youth. Keith will retire from 31 years at Juvenile Hall next September: this will be his last Council of Churches dinner. A love offering will be taken up for the continuing support of this work. When: Monday, November 1 6:00 will call for tickets, 6:30 dinner Where: St. Matthew Lutheran Church 399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek Who: Pastors, church representatives, missions committee members, interested folks How much: Donation $14 Reservations: Call the Council office at (510) 933-6030 NOTE: We will not transact business at the Dinner this year. We will hold a separate business meeting in order to keep faith with both the needs of our chaplains and their supporters, and the integrity of Council business matters. BUSINESS MEETING When: Sunday, October 17, 2:00 p.m. Where Walnut Creek United Methodist Church Education Building/Wesley Room 1543 Sunnyvale Avenue,Walnut Creek Who: All those interested to have a say in Council decisions. Each member congregation is allowed three voting representatives (including the pastor). Those in attendance shall constitute a quorum. What: We will receive a proposed budget for 1994 and vote on officers for the coming year. Matters of concern to be raised for discussion must be submitted in writing to the Council office by October 11.
