BACKGROUND: This past summer, at the request of the Human Relations Commission, the . Board of Supervisors declared a number of seats on the Commission vacant and reduced the size of the Commission. Even with the reduced size, there are several vacancies on the Commission. Recruitment over the past several months has produced quite a large number of potential candidates . We are recommending that our Committee be permitted to interview all of the candidates and then make recommendations to the Board on those candidates we believe are most qualified to . serve on the Human Relations Commission. Van Marter sistant County Administrator SUBJECT: PROCESS TO BE FOLLO G IN FILLING VACANCIES ON THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION The Board of Supervisors has referred to your Committee several vacancies on the Human Relations Commission. The Board has also reduced the size of the Commission (at the Commission's request) and has declared additional seats vacant due to non-attendance. We have advertised for the vacancies on the Commission and have 26 applications on hand, copies of which are attached. In some cases these are applications from last year when we last filled vacancies on the Commission. The following decision needs to be made by your Committee: 1 . How does your Committee wish to interview the applicants for the vacant seats on the Commission? 2 . Do you wish to invite all 26 applicants, recognizing that not all will appear, or do you wish to screen the applications down to a more managable number and invite those individuals to be interviewed? 3 . When do you wish to conduct interviews? Interviews could be scheduled for November 8, 1993 at 10 : 30 A.M. or, if your Committee is willing to start an hour early at 9 :00 A.M. , the interviews could be scheduled for October 25, 1993 . With the size of the Commission reduced to 12 members, there are currently six vacancies on the Commission. Attached is the "Maddy Book" entry which reflects the vacancies, but does not yet reflect the reduction in the size of the Commission.
