When a mammogram does idents a tumor, the cancer has usually been established for an estimated eight years, therefore, making the monthly se f exam even more important; and WHEREAS, historically, breast cancer research has been grossly underfunded at the federal level. While last year Congress appropriated over $400 million for research, much more funding is needed to find a cure and means of preventing breast cancer adequately; and WHEREAS, Californians now have a unique opportunity to support breast cancer research through the California Breast Cancer Research Fund Act, which allows individuals to make a voluntary contribution to support research when filing state income tax returns, and WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of all citizens to join together to promote greater awareness about a disease that affects everyone, the need for true early detection and adequate treatment options, and the urgency of finding a cure. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares October 1993 as BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH and October 19 as BREAST EXAM AND MAMMOGRAPHY AWARENESS DAY in Contra Costa County.
