CLERK BOARD OF SUPERVIS S
CONTRA COSTA CO.
The Honorable Tom Torlakson, Chairman
Board of Supervisors
Contra Costa County
651 Pine Street, 1st floor
Martinez, California 94553
Dear Supervisor Torlakson:
RE: Proposition 172 - Half. cent sales tax
As you are well aware, recent legislative action failed to exempt
the Kensington Community Service District's Police Department and
the County's P-6 areas from the property tax shift. Without the
availability of additional revenues, the community of Kensington
faces the very real possibility of having its Police Department
close its doors. We have been told by the Governor's office and
State Finance Department that revenues from the half cent sales tax
have been earmarked for public safety, to ensure that public safety
services in this State are adequate.
Governor Wilson has said Proposition 172 was designed to provide
a stable and continuing source of revenue for local government to
ensure that adequate public safety services are in fact provided
at the local level. The primary intent :of this additional source
of funding is to avoid any reduction in public safety services that
are designated as essential and the 'first priority of local
government.
We ask the Board to reconsider the allocation of the half cent
sales tax revenue, to include a small percentage to Kensington.
