HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10121993 - 1.13 1 . 13 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 9 3/6 0 4 Honoring Edward Spencer,Jr!, Upon his Retirement as District Administrator of the Ambrose Park and Recreation!District Edward Spencer,Jr.,was hired as District Administrator for the Ambrose Park and Rec- reation District on May 1, 1976; and WHEREAS, he has served in this capacity with distinction for the last seventeen years greatly expanding the park district,increasing the number of parks in the district from one park to four and acquir- ing the Ambrose Community Center in 1979; and WHEREAS,under his leadership the park district has become the hub of community activities in West Pittsburg serving as the home of wide variety of community services for families and children and a place for West Pittsburg residents to point to with pride; and WHEREAS,Mr.Spencer has a distinguished record of community service.He served as President of the Ambrose Lions Club from 11980 through 1981 and as the club's Secretary from 1982 through 1986. during that time he touched many lives in the community by delivering food baskets,pro- viding a clothes closet at the center and providing glasses and many other services to those in need in our community; and WHEREAS, Mr. Spencer quietly went around doing what needed to be done not seeking any recognition. Whether it was being one of the founders of the West Pittsburg Area Foundation,an organiza- tion to provide funding for West Pittsburg youth sports activities,one of the founders of the Johnny Filbeck Scholarship Foundation or helping to provide a closed captioned television for a deaf West Pittsburg resident, his office door was never closed to those in need; and WHEREAS, Mr.Spencer is a formidable advocate for West Pittsburg residents,never failing to fight for what he feels is for the good of the community and is a familiar sight at County Board of Supervisors' meetings. He has been especially outspoken on such issues as needed transportation improvements and additional police protection for;the West Pittsburg community. Additionally,Mr.Spencer was a leader in the fight against a landfill site in West Pittsburg; and he currently serves as a commissioner of the Riverview Fire District and is a member of the West Pittsburg Traffic Advisory Committee; and Mr.Spencer has also served his community as a charter member of the West Pittsburg Alliance and then as staff to the'West Pittsburg Municipal Advisory Council,as a member of the Willowbrook Task Force, Highway 4 Task Force and numerous other county commissions, committees and task forces. NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CON- TRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA,does hereby congratulate and commend Edward Spencer,Jr.,on his retirement after seventeen years of exemplary service to the community.
