P300 (M347) 7/89 (Rev. ) J ' Draft Contra Costa County 1993 SHERIFF'S RANGER DEFINITION: Under supervision,provides non-sworn patrol services to contracted agencies such as parks and special districts; observes and reports problems, violations and emergencies to supervisory personnel; and performs other duties as required.. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Positions in this class are located in the Sheriff-Coroner's Department where they are responsible for providing non-sworn field patrol services in a designated area of a park or special district. These services include identifying and reporting problems;assisting the public by providing directions and answering questions concerning park/district rules and regulations; and issuing citations for parking, fishing and boating violations. This class is distinguished from Deputy Sheriff in that incumbents in the latter class are sworn peace officers who perform a full range of duties involving law enforcement, crime prevention and detection,and detention activities in the Sheriff-Coroner's Department. Sheriff's Rangers do not have peace officer powers but do issue routine warnings and citations. Positions in this class report to sworn personnel in the Sheriff-Coroner's Department. TYPICAL TASKS: In a park or special district, conducts vehicle and bicycle patrol of designated areas; contacts park or district personnel for updates on security issues; Answers questions and provides information to the public on park/district rules and regulations; Observes and reports violations of regulations; Writes reports; Assists in traffic control, conducting tours and in providing directions to.the public; issues citations for traffic, boating and/or Fishing infractions; Maintains continuous radio contact with Sheriff's Department sworn personnel; Responds to accidents or emergencies and contacts appropriate emergency personnel; Provides parking'enforcement services to the park or district; Communicates information to park/district personnel and the Sheriff's Department; reports criminal activities to sworn supervisory personnel; Patrols reservoir areas by boat to monitor fishing and boating violations or safety hazards; May assist in search and rescue activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: License Required: Valid California Vehicle Operator's License. Education: Possessiom of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or a high school proficiency certificate. Experience: One year of full-time experience or its equivalent in a position involving substantial public contact. Background Requirement: Successful completion of a thorough background investigation conducted by the Sheriff:Coroner's Department. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to communicate effectively with the public and other employees;ability to work effectively and harmoniously with other staff;ability to write clear and accurate reports;ability to read, understand and apply regulations and procedures; ability to follow oral and written instructions;ability to perform physically demanding tasks;and the ability to remain calm and use common sense in emergency situations.
