HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10051993 - 1.24 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Declaring October 8, ) 1993, as GEORGE GORDON DAY in ) RESOL UTION NO. 93/593 Contra Costa County ) WHEREAS, it was due to George Gordon's vision of a countywide, multicampus district, that we now have today the Contra Costa County Community College District; and WHEREAS, George Gordon is being honored at the inaugural of Emeritus College at Diablo Valley College to represent the pioneering spirit that has characterized both Mr. Gordon's efforts arts to form the District and the new program designed to benefit returning students with Batchelor Degrees; and WHEREAS, not only did George Gordon campaign voters to pass the formation of a community college district, but he personally negotiated the sale of the site which now houses DVC. Also, he was appointed to the first governing board of the District, which he served for 28 years, and helped develop the policies that shaped one of the most successful community college districts in the state; and WHEREAS, George Gordon's community involvement is not limited to the District. He built a successful. law practice, is a Past Exalted Ruler of the Richmond Lodge of Elks, served as President of the Martinez Kiwanis Club and the Contra Costa County School Boards Association, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Martinez Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Board of Trustees and Regents of St. Mary's College. Most recently, Mr. Gordon helped organize the Diablo Valley College Foundation on which he served until his retirement; and WHEREAS; we are all fortunate to have benefitted from Mr. Gordon's vast contributions to education, business, and the overall quality of life of the citizens of Contra Costa County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares October 8, 1993 as GEORGE GORDON DAY in Contra Costa County.
