SUBJECT: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF CALIFORNIA LIBRARY LITERACY SERVICE MATCHING FUNDS FOR LITERACY
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Authorize Contra Costa County Library to accept California State Library funding for Project
Second Chance in the amount of$41,005.00 for period of January, 1993 through June 30, 1993
to:
1. Provide additional support and equipment for the computer-assisted Learning Center.
2. Improve the services to adult readers and tutors in the areas of support groups, activities
and additional materials.
3. Develop a literacy oriented collection of videos and other materials for the Contra Costa
County Library collection.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
No additional County funds are required. The Library's contribution would include supervision
and assistance by Project Second Chance staff, training and support of volunteer tutors, and
financial accounting through the office of Library Administrative Officer.
BACKGROUND:
On December 15, 1992 the Board approved the request from the Contra Costa County Library
to apply for California State Library matching funds for Project Second Chance in the amount
of$24,383.00. At that time the amount of match was $1.00 for each $7.77 raised locally. When
the funds were awarded the match became $1.00 for each $4.62 raised locally raising the
amount to $41,005.00.
